This is a Rob Liefeld character called Warwolf that I have done for the http://robliefeld.proboards.com/index.cgi

drawing throwdowns that happen on occasion.

Just to show a bit of process. I did the rough lines in pencil. Scanned in the rough image and inked digitally using my ancient wacom tablet which i am thankfully gtting used to. Each piece was inked separately - body, head, hair and fluffy parts. Lastly I made the rockface with the character name carved into it using a font called 'tramyad'. Again colored on multiple layers separating the character color from the background parts. Pissy background I know but I might do a more elaborate one later but for now this is it.

I know this doesn't look like 11 years work but I did actually start this 11 years ago. Drew the lines in 2001, inked it in 2002. Got abandoned for 8 or 9 years then found on an old disc. Digitally re-inked about a year ago with a couple of character additions and flats added. Finished colors done over the last few hours.

Glad its over.

The final gallery image I made was this one. had a bit of an issue deciding which version I would put in but ended up choosing the second from the top. Printed at A2 size on 160 gsm Bond paper. Came out quite nicely if i do say so myself.

This picture was drawn circa 2001-ish. I always liked the image but not the inking so it was abandoned like a bastard child. PS all these characters are originals by me some of which have names and basic stories because I was trying to put together a comic years ago which was also an idea abandoned until recently.

Fast forward 10 years and I dug it out of my olf files to give a bit of a face-lift. It's a work in progress as I'm still adding in characters as you can see by this...

Just added in the flat colors to get a preview of what is to come. If it comes out nicely I might print it for the next gallery showing.

So its been a really long time since I have attempted to draw the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and just for the hell of it I drew them yesterday. I did draw them separately but they seem to fit nicely together in one image so I have combined them now. I am going to attampt digital inking and if I fail miserably I will just go back to the olf fashioned way.

So I have been building a dragon for uni art class. Every ingredient is kid safe and non-allergenic. You can see the frame to start made of aluminium wire and foam balls...

...a little bit of chicken wire....

...magiclay (paper based clay) for the body...

...and finally some curtain material for the 'skin' part of the wings. More to come...

So I fixed my error. The spider light symbol in the background is now correct and the picture looks much better.

My Drawing Process

So step one is the actual pencil drawing part. This was done quite quickly while waiting for a class to start at uni.

Stage 2 inks. I actually filmed myself inking this one and you can see the process on Youtube if you can track it down cos the damn link wont paste in. Anyway I dont usually do much inking but I did a decent job this time.

Next stage is laying in the flats (solid colors) in photoshop. The flat colors sit on a layer underneath the inks layer. There are a few methods to do this and I suspect I only know the difficult way to do it so I won't say how.

Next comes the shaded areas of color. You can pput these directly onto the same as the flat colors layer but I add an extra layer in and put them in on top of the flats but still under the inks.

Finally some extra effects on more new layers. The spider light which I drew wrong (but who cares) amd the word ballons add to the comic feel of the image. I don't know why but i put the 'bad guys' wearing t-shirts that have symbols from other marvel characters.

So after a lot of doing this picture is finished. The three components of this image (Spiderman, Venom & Background) were created entirely separately and originally for different images but all seemed to work well together so here they are!! There are also a few different versions of this one that has a much wider background and another that has a white 'halo' around the characters to make them stand out more. Moight post those later.

So here is just a few sketches I've done over the last week or so. Mostly just stuff to keep busy or distract me from the fact that I have so much other stuff to do. This first one is the character BOLT. He is one of the characters from my yet to be finished comic.

These ones are pretty obvious except ofr the one on the left. From left to right - Iceman, the Human Torch, Spiderman and the Hulk.

This one I drew today while sitting in a seminar for work. Wasn't feeling very well and it seems to have come out in my drawing.

Really pullin out the old stuff now. I drew this around 2002/03 I think when I was at Tafe, it was going to be for a comic cover. I think I had only just really learnt to start using photoshop properly at this point. I was and still am quite happy with the detailing of the characters in this image however the character design forthe most part is quite weak. My unfortunate drawback is I can draw things/characters that are already designed but I'm crap at designing my own.

The Cow!!

New post but quite an old picture. I used to do a weekly comic stip for some of my coworkers with this character. He didn't usually have a bong in his hands but I made this image of my character for a friend's birthday and put it on a t-shirt for her. She liked it so that's all that matters.

This one started out as a design for a t-shirt but it took about 5 months just for me to scan the original pencilled image. When I updated to windows 7 my old scanner didn't want to update with me so it took me a while to buy a new one. Aas you can see the guitar wasn't even part of the original image. I created that totally in photoshop which there is no inked only version of it.

Presented here hopefully for your viewing pleasure is a few stages that I go through to get a final image. I have made another version of the final rendering that has a more manga-ish colour design which I might upload later.

On my recent teaching rounds I made a class portrait for the kids that I taught for my time in the school. I think it turned out rather well. I'm not usually very good at likenesses but I think on I did a pretty damn good job on this one.

Anyone who know my drawing style can tell straight away I didn't draw this picture. It was done by my good firend James Hart (check out my links - Jims Blog) illustrator extrordinaire!! I asked if I could use his piture to practice coloring because at the moment my scanner is being useless and I cant scan my own drawings. This is the first instance of me coloring James' art or anyone elses for that matter and i'm quite pleased with the result.

The current topic for Illustration Friday threw me into mental overlaod. 'Flying' could be interpreted so many ways and my first instinct was to go the superhero route 'cos it what I like to do. This next pic I did a long time ago now...about 2002 maybe. I just recently discovered it on an old CD left over from TAFE days. I quite liked the result of this one. I went in search of inspiration on the net for different tutorials for Photoshop effects and I liked the light shining through water effect. In my early days of Photoshop usage tho I didn’t always use lots of layers so fixing the bits I don't like is a little difficult now but ce la vie.

This isn't one of my favourite pictures but its a good example of the stages I go through when I do a full colour image. There is always a rough sketch. Sometimes really quick sometimes there might be several versions. This one was a quickie. I'm a crap inker but I still try. This was done using fineliners. I'll only ink with quills in more careful professional quality if I'm doing paid work. That being said I've only been paid once to draw something. Inks are scanned into photoshop and then coloured on multiple layers in that program. This was done for a contest that I never actually entered because I ran out of time.

I actually did this picture a few months back but never went anywhere with it. I'm not at all religious but I liked the movie 'The Prophecy' which was followed up by four-ish sequels. The movies were all about a war going on between two factions of angels in heaven. I just thought that if angels did exist, they would have to be damn powerful beings so I drew this as my representation.

This pic only took about 5 minutes to draw but I kinda like it.

While waiting in my car for a Uni class to start (I'm always really early) I started sketching a couple of pages for a comic. This image was the result of one of the panels from that. The rest of the image was this dude standing on a train station platform.

I am slowly working on a comic. After 30 years of drawing I gotta produce something decent sooner or later!!

Part 2 of the African animal images. These are the second images from this series. You can notice a huge cherat with the elephent image. The small elephent is obviously a resized copy of the bigger one with the levels changed to alter the colours but it still works.

The monkey picture took the longest to do because I couldnt figure out what to do with his arms. Originally he was holding a banana but I ended up with him just hangin around.

Had to happen eventually I guess. I've never been one to 'blog'. Never really had that many thoughts I'd want to share before. I'm gonna try and be a bit productive with this blog and use it mostly as a running record of my sketches and scribblings that I do. I mostly stick to comic type pictures but occasionally I will post something a bit different.

I am in no way a professional artist but I love to draw so if anyone ever happens to come across this blog let me know what you think. Comments (hopefully positive or at least constructive) are always welcome.

I did these two pictures a couple of weeks ago for a friend at work who is about to have a baby. The baby's bedroom has an african animal theme so I made some wall hanging to contribute. I did a couple of very loose sketches for these 2 images - just basic shapes, and did the rest in photoshop. I have since done 2 more images for this set which I will post in the next few days and may do some more if the urge comes upon me.

If I knew how to use Illustrator better, it might have been a better option to do these as vector images but I'm too busy to learn another program at the moment.
